West Nile Virus Found in Mayfield Heights

Cuyahoga Board of Health urges personal protection

The Cuyahoga County Board of Health announced that traps set in , Cleveland Heights, South Euclid, Euclid and East Cleveland collected mosquitoes that tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

No human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in Ohio at this time, according to the county health board. The traps were set by the Ohio Board of Health and health officials said it is not unusual for infected mosquitoes to be identified at this time of the year.

County Health Commissioner Terry Allan reminded residents to take steps to protect themselves.

"Utilizing appropriate personal protection measures is critical for WNV prevention this time of year," he said. "Historically, the number of WNV cases nationwide peaks in late August and early September."

Steps to help prevent mosquito activity are:
• Dispose of containers that collect water
• Eliminate areas of standing water
• Repair leaky faucets that leave puddles outside
• Empty and refill bird baths at least once a week
• Clean, drain and cover pools or hot tubs not in use
• Unclog gutters so they drain properly
• Fill tree holes with tar or cement
• Keep children indoors during peak mosquito activity – one hour before and one hour after sunset

Prevent personal exposure to mosquitoes by using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil. People who have symptoms, which include high fever, headaches, muscle aches, vomiting and loss of appetite, in two to 15 days after a mosquito bite should seek medical attention.
