"New Year’s Eve is a time to celebrate both the past year and the possibilities of the year to come, yet far too often poor decisions by teens result in tragic injuries and deaths," Stephen Wallace, senior advisor for Policy, Research, and Education at SADD, said in a news release. "To avoid a fatal start to the New Year, teen passengers need to use their voices if they have concerns about their friends’ behaviors. They will be heard."

The study of 2,294 teens in grades 11 and 12 also listed holidays and events and the percentage of those surveyed who said they drove on those dates while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Topping the list was New Year's Eve at 10 percent, followed by Fourth of July (8 percent), prom night, football games and homecoming (6 percent for each), school dances (5 percent) and graduation (4 percent).
