Poll Voters Agree to "Save Thanksgiving"

92 percent say stores should be closed on holiday.

Respondents to a Hillcrest Patch poll side with an effort to "save Thanksgiving," with 92 percent saying that stores should be closed so employees can spend the holiday with their families.

A "save Thanksgiving" petition drive was started on Change.org by Anthony Hardwick, a Nebraska employee who wanted to persuade company officials to go back to the regular 5 a.m. Black Friday time instead of the midnight opening that took place this year.

On Monday, a petition with 190,000 signatures was presented to Target President and CEO Gregg Steinhafel by Seth Coleman, a Target employee and Minnesota resident.

That effort also started 26 other campaigns on Change.org to get , , Macy's and other stores to change their midnight openings, said Benjamin Joffe-Walt, director of communications for Change.org.
