Names in the News: Donna Finney

Mayfield Heights councilwoman and Mayfield-Hillcrest Patch blogger likes the city's small-town feel.

Name: Donna Finney

Occupation: councilwoman since 2006. She also served four years on the Mayfield City School District Board of Education.

Hometown: A 30-year resident of Mayfield Heights. She grew up in University Heights – even then she frequently came to Mayfield Heights to the Eastgate Coliseum, big slide or Roller Palace at Golden Gate Plaza. "We call came to Mayfield Heights."

Why she ran for council: "I had been on the board of education prior. I just wanted a challenge."

What she likes about Mayfield Heights: "It has kind of a small-town sense to it. Yet it's close to the freeway and the hospital. The schools are special."

Her proudest accomplishment: "In 2001, I was named the Mayfield Citizen of the Year. Also, serving on the Mayfield school board and serving on Mayfield Heights City Council are very good accomplishments. Obviously, raising my children to be successful."

The most influential person in her life: "Probably my son, Morris. He's inspired me to be strong and have strength because he never complains even though he's severely disabled."

Civic involvement: The long list includes 15 years managing girls softball teams, service on parent-teacher groups at Millridge Elementary, Mayfield Middle and Mayfield High schools and volunteering for Meals on Wheels. She currently serves as president at the Hillcrest 100 and a trustee with the Friends of Mayfield Library.

How someone can make a difference in their community: "By volunteering their time, that's the most important thing. Let city council know what's going on in the city. They tend to tell me a lot everywhere I go."
