Critter Corner: Celebrate Mother's Day in Style

Here are some ideas to get you started for this coming Sunday.

Over the years mothers could expect flowers and candy for Mother's Day, just as dads got ready to receive another tie for Father's Day. Times have changed and Mother's Day is a lot more creative. This year celebrate if you are the mother of a "fur-kid," the guardian/owner of a female pet, want to surprise your mother with pet friendly activities or just want a reason to do something special.

1 Donate time or money to animal charities that work with abandoned/orphaned baby animals. Locally has not only helped find homes, they have held a TNR (trap-neuter-return) program in Slavic Village to dramatically reduce the feral cat population. Tell them the donation is a gift for Mother's Day.

2 Spend some time with your mom and drive needy dogs to their forever homes. Transports span multiple states, yet each car drives only two hour legs. This is plenty of time to chat and catch up in person while doing something fun. helps many dogs each week.

3 Watch a movie – pull out the classics and curl up with Beethoven or That Darn Cat.  K-9, Hotel for Dogs, 101 Dalmatians are other favorites. Pop some popcorn and get some special treats at or from (the proceeds help rescue dogs on "death row").

4 Give a book to yourself or your mom. James Harriott All Creatures Great and Small is a great read.

5 Go for a walk. For active canines and people the Cleveland Metroparks holds a dog walk in every month. Want something ritzy? Then go uptown and take your pup for a stroll at Legacy Village. Their dog friendly atmosphere will be sure to put a grin on your face.  One of the stores Moochie and Company even has non-alcoholic Bowser beer just for dogs.

6 Most dogs love to go for a ride. Take a short trip to Great Lakes Brewery, located in downtown Cleveland, or Edison's in Tremont. Both offer food drink and a place to bring your pooch.

7 Celebrate a day early. Go to the eighth annual PAWS-4-A-Cause: Adopt-a-thon & Family Fun Day from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Cleveland Metroparks South Chagrin Reservation Polo Field in Moreland Hills. There will be lots of contests, food and fun.

8 There is still time to order from animal friendly organizations like the ASPAC and Natural Resources Defense Council. Even if you delay there are e-cards that can be sent last minute.
