On the Campaign Trail for Mayor of Mayfield Heights... Week 4

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here

It is hard to believe this is week 4 of campaigning. I have already met hundreds or residents and have worn out a pair of flip flops. At the beginning of the week I waited anxiously for my petitions to be validated. I breathed a sigh of relief when the Board of Elections showed me as a candidate validated to run for the Office of Mayor of Mayfield Heights. It’s official now.  I’m on the ballot on November 5th to be elected the next elected Mayor of Mayfield Heights.

With that part of campaigning completed, I made the decision to spend time with my granddaughter, Elianna.   I took her to the Mayfield Heights city pool. The 90 degree temperatures prompted me to spend the day relaxing at the picturesque kiddy pool. I was impressed with the improvements to the pool (keep in mind, my youngest would have been 22, so it’s been a long time since I spent time watching my kids swim). I decided to call our Service Director, Andy Fornaro to compliment him and his staff on how delightful it was for the children. My granddaughter was in heaven. Elianna who is 2, was running around through the various water apparatuses, putting her head under the water, which was wonderful to watch. It brought back fond memories of the days when I sat on the edge of the pool in the 80’s and 90’s watching my kids swim and socializing with the other mothers. Some of my best friends are the other moms I met at that same pool back nearly 30 years ago. Coincidently, I saw one of my friends there with her grandchildren and she laughed and said she remembered the good old days when we sat there every day parked on the side of the same pool. Funny thing is, I met her because her two year old son knocked a bucket over my two year old daughters head, and we have been friends ever since.  Don't worry, both kids are married now and doing well.

Although the day was fun, I have to admit that I nervously watched Elianna through the crowds of children, remembering the days when I had the responsibility of watching my three young children. I saw all of the young people that day with their children, and realized they were mostly the age of my daughters and their friends. After we left the pool and my daughter picked up Elianna, I realized I was exhausted. It was hard to get myself ready to knock on doors, because I forgot how draining it is to have the responsibility of watching children in the pool. Let’s face it; I’m no spring chicken. Elianna and I had so much fun, I can’t wait to take her to the pool again, especially since being a Nonna means I can send her home to her parents at the end of the day.
