Time of your Life

So take the photographs And still frames in your mind. Hang it on a shelf In good health and good time.

Now that my son has graduated and left Mayfield Schools, I feel like it is the end of an era in my life. I have spent almost half my life as a Mayfield Schools parent. I was 24 years old when my oldest daughter entered Kindergarten. The schools system became my own personal haven. Having a disabled child made it difficult to work and my volunteer work not only gave me a purpose in life, it kept me busy. Being involved in the schools gave me the opportunity to have adult conversation, to meet people and make friends. It gave me the challenges of not only dealing with a variety of issues and people, but to keep my mind active and alive.

I became so involved in the schools, that every single day I was volunteering for some committee, in a classroom or teaching something. Working with the children was wonderful; I loved being an art docent and teaching keyboarding to the students. It filled my days with activities and helped me spend a lot of time with my own children, getting to know their classmates and teachers. To this day, many of the children I worked with over the years tell me stories of things that we did together or simply remember our time together. When my oldest daughter started at Bowling Green University, one of her friends from Mayfield saw me helping her move into the dorm and ran to give me a hug. He laughed and said, "Mrs. Finney, are you going to be my room mother at college too?" Later, he told me how he felt at home seeing me there and it made his first day seem like it was not such a big transition.

My time at Mayfield taught me a lot about how to help people, gave me life lessons on how to really respect others, and earn the respect from them in return. Most importantly, it gave me a purpose in my life. I was lucky that I was able to be so involved and spend so much time with my children and their friends and classmates, lucky to have met so many wonderful people over the years. I was lucky to have been able to participate in my children's lives and their education with a "hands on approach". Now, that era has passed and I have to find other ways to fill my time. I will surely miss all the wonderful staff and administrators that I have worked with over the years at Mayfield City Schools. I appreciate the opportunity to have been able to dedicate my life to helping other's and more importantly, appreciate their trust in me to be such an intricate part of their lives. I will miss you Mayfield!!

Another turning point;
A fork stuck in the road.

Time grabs you by the wrist;
Directs you where to go.

So make the best of this test and don't ask why.
It's not a question but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable
But in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs
And still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf
In good health and good time.

Tattoos of memories
And dead skin on trial.

For what it's worth,
It was worth all the while.

It's something unpredictable
But in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
So make the best of this task and don't ask why.
It's not a question but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable
But in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
