If you're going through hell, keep on going ...

If you're goin' through hell keep on going Don't slow down if you're scared don't show it You might get out before the devil even knows you're there

Everybody has bad days, some of us have bad weeks, months, years ... Some of our quandaries are small ones, like breaking a nail or having a boss who is in a bad mood and snaps your head off for no reason. Unfortunately, sometimes you have real problems, like health issues or losing a loved one. These are not so easy to resolve and, in my mind, are the hardest to accept.

I love the Sunscreen song, written by Baz Luhrmann, which has some great advice. If you have never heard it, I would suggest you take a look at the video. My favorite lines are the ones in which he speaks about worrying:

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind. The kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

I understand that statement, because the real predicaments I have had in my life have blindsided me, like when I found out I had cancer. The doctor's office called me on a Saturday morning, as I sat on my couch sipping my coffee in my sweats. When they told me that the doctor would wait in his office for me to get there, I knew immediately I had cancer. I was stunned when I was sitting in Florida on the beach and found out that my son was being rushed to the hospital, into Intensive Care. Who would have thought on that beautiful, sunny morning I would be blind sided with real problems?

I try not to worry about money or what I consider the "solvable problems" in life. I save my worries for the big problems like illness and death – in my mind everything else is not so substantial to worry about.

My daughter once called me up and said, "Mom, I have bad news, I'm dropping out of school, I met a 50-year-old man and we are getting married. I just found out that I was pregnant, but don't worry, he has eight children but the good news is that his wife promises to leave him soon." After my brief moment of silence she said, "OK, Mom, I got a D in my Chemistry class, but it doesn't seem quite so bad now does it?"

Many times in life when you thinks things are bad, remember, they can be worse or worsen with time. I feel that if you worry about every little thing, you will make yourself sick. Being optimistic and dealing with problems "head on" has always worked best for me. When they told me I had cancer I told the doctor to first save my life and next save my hair, please.

Each visit I told the doctor more and more about myself, my children, my life – until I was not just an insurance form for him to fill out, I was a person who he had a desire to save. My greatest insurance policy has always been to have people get to know you – really know who you are in a personal way. Then the stranger who is your doctor realizes that you are a person and works that much harder to help you because you are no longer a stranger to him. On the other hand... that does not always work, because there are some people in life that no matter how hard you keep trying, they will never like you!

Deal with your problems head on because " If you're going' through hell keep on going
Don't slow down if you're scared don't show it
You might get out before the devil even knows you're there"
