Hillcrest Hospital ranked 5th in Cleveland Area

U.S. News & World Report ranking has Cleveland Clinic No. 1

U.S. News & World Report's annual Best Hospitals rankings rated Hillcrest Hospital as the fifth-best hospital in Greater Cleveland, behind the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Lutheran Hospital and Fairview Hospital.

Tracy Wheeler, media relations manager for the Cleveland Clinic, said this was the first time in the 21-year history of the rankings that lists were established for specific cities. Cleveland Clinic hospitals were nine of the 17 local hospitals that were ranked.

“These rankings illustrate the strength of Cleveland Clinic’s value to communities throughout Northeast Ohio,” said David Bronson, M.D., president of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals, in a press release. “While all hospitals can’t be all things to all people, we are here to serve the needs of every patient in the region by building a health care system that places a highly specialized hospital at the center to handle the most difficult cases, with smaller centers of excellence in local communities.”

Nationally, there were 4,852 hospitals reviewed for rankings in 16 specialties. Of those, 152 performed well enough to qualify for a rank in any specialty. Death rates, procedure volume and balance of nurses and patients were used to determine rank in 12 categories, while reputation was the basis of scores in the other four specialties.

Scores were assigned based on reputation (32.5 percent), mortality index (32.5 percent), patient safety (5 percent) and nurse staffing, technology and quality of care factors (30 percent).

Hillcrest, which was ranked 41st nationally last year in treatment of two specialities – digestive disorders and respiratory care – did not make the national rankings this year. However, the hospital was rated as high-performing in eight areas: cancer; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics, kidney disorders, neurology and neurosurgery; pulmonology; and urology.
