Mayfield Eight Graders Launch Balloons to Kick Off Year

The annual launch is a hands-on lesson in weather patterns.

For the 14th consecutive year, Mayfield Middle School 8th graders sent balloons up, up and away to signify the beginning of another school year.

The students launched about 100 balloons into the sky Friday afternoon on the field behind the school. Visit the district website to view more photos from the launch.

Science teacher David Lammert said the launch is a hands-on lesson in weather patterns. Each year, the students place pieces of paper in the balloons asking a person to contact the school if they find the balloon.

One year, a balloon was found in Atlanta, according to the school district.
