Roll 'em: Commission Seeks To Build Local Film Industry

Greater Cleveland Film Commission to discuss the future of film in region

Having superhero movies like “The Avengers” film locally is a great start, but the Greater Cleveland Film Commission wants to turn movie-making into a local powerhouse industry.

Greater Cleveland Film Commission Executive Director said his organization’s goal is to help create 3,000 jobs over the next three years in the local film industry.

Schwarz will discuss the commission’s strategy to make this become a reality during the Heights-Hillcrest Chamber of Commerce’s Business Breakfast Series at the in Mayfield Village on Thursday morning.

“We’re going to talk about what the economic impact will be for the region,” Schwarz said. “We want to help people get involved … and create an industry that’s attractive to young people.”

A big part of getting films like “The Avengers” and “Fun Size” to the region has been the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit which began in 2009. The credit has allowed studios to cut filming costs and that has made the area an attractive destination.

Since then, 16 tax credit-aided projects have been filmed exclusively in Northeast Ohio. Those projects have accounted for 901 jobs and $27.3 million in household income, along with additional benefits for local business servicing those projects, according to a March report the Greater Cleveland Film Commission ordered from Cleveland State.
