Mayfield's Wildcat Sport & Fitness Opens Sept. 3

The former pool and field house on Mayfield High School's campus will reopen with a workout area, equipment and community fitness classes

More fitness classes and equipment for Mayfield-Hillcrest area residents are coming to Mayfield High School's campus in a couple weeks.

Wildcat Sport & Fitness is the new name of the pool and field house facility. The building closed Aug. 10 for annual maintenance and renovations. It reopens Tuesday Sept. 3 with several new additions, including treadmills, ellipticals, bicycles and exercise stations adjacent to the upstairs track.

About two years ago, district administration began working with on the project with the recreation departments of Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Gates Mills and Highland Heights. Those communities manage Wildcat Sport & Fitness, which is open to their residents.

"(The district) wanted to get out of the business of recreating," Mayfield Village Recreation Director Bill Thomas said. "Their business is educating students. They approached the communities and said, 'You're the experts, would you be interested in managing our indoor facility?"

One result of the collaboration is the offering of classes like yoga, Zumba and fitness boot camp. The district will mail a full listing of classes to its residents the week of Aug. 26, Thomas said.

"It's unique because there are not many schools that open their doors up while class (is in session)," Thomas said. "It's just been a wonderful relationship with the school."
