Cleveland Heights: Public Forum Planned To Debate School Bond Issue

The League of Women Voters has scheduled a public forum in September about the $134.8 million bond issue that Cleveland Heights voters will consider in November.

A facilities plan seeks to modernize the school district's aging buildings and bring its facilities in line with its student population. The total project is expected to cost more than $230 million and be broken into two phases that involves closing some schools and rehabilitating others.

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Chapter of the Cuyahoga Area League of Women Voters has scheduled the forum for 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Cleveland Heights - University Heights Library on Lee Road.

Shaker Heights: New Report Card Shows ‘Unacceptable’ Results For Shaker Schools

Ohio's newly designed school report cards show mixed results for Shaker Heights City Schools. Shaker Superintendent Gregory Hutchings Jr. said the district's struggles are "unacceptable" and they will do better.

The new report cards rate schools in nine different areas and districts will receive an A through F grade for each.

Cuyahoga Falls: Payless ShoeSource Clerk Wards off Suspected Robber

A suspected robber was arrested by Cuyahoga Falls police this week after he allegedly tried to hold up a local Payless ShoeSource.

At about 4:19 p.m. Monday, Travis E. Washington, 40, of Akron, walked into the Payless, located at 1963 State Rd., and demanded money from the lone clerk behind the counter, according to the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department Facebook page.

The clerk reportedly told Washington the alarm had been tripped, prompting him to flee the store without any cash.

Cuyahoga Falls police spotted Washington walking down State Road shortly after the incident and arrested him.

North Canton: YMCA Child Care Center Celebrates Grand Opening

The $2 million North Canton YMCA Child Care Center opened its doors Aug. 20 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and invited the public to come in and take a peek.

The 16,000-square-foot building will house 200-plus children from birth to eighth grade, and, according to YMCA Child Care Director Julie Daugherty, the new kitchen will feed at least 100 kids per day.

The interior is modern and spacious, and the color palette offers natural and neutral tones to simulate a homier atmosphere, said Daugherty.  

Mentor: Food Inspections Find Gnats & Dirty Bathrooms in Area Restaurants

Each month, the Lake County General Health District makes inspection reports from the previous month available to the public. In July, five Mentor restaurants had three or more violations, which ranged from gnats to improper cleaning techniques. Find out more about the reports in the attached Google Fusion table.

Mayfield Schools Earns "A" on State Report Card

Mayfield City Schools received an "A" grade on its report card from the Ohio Department of Education. The grade is good for 100 percent score.

The district also met all of the 24 indicators listed on the state report card.

Westlake Super Frustrated Over “D’s” on State Report Card

District receives "D's" despite scores in high 90s.

While Westlake School District received three “D’s” on therevamped state report card issued on Aug. 22, school superintendent Dr. Dan Keenan expressed some frustration, but added the administration will review the information to determine if the letter grades are representative of a trend or a margin of error.

He also indicated the "grades" do not reflect high performance of students.

Avon Teachers Ratify Contract, Will Receive Raises

Superintendent says settlement, 1.5 percent raises, is in line with district's five-year contract.

After months of negotiation, the Avon Teachers’ Association and the Avon Board of Education reached an agreement to ratify the teachers' contracts.

The contract, which will run through July of 2016, reflects changes in state law and Ohio’s continually changing educational funding system.
