Highland Heights only used 57 percent of usual amount.
Fewer snowstorms meant less salt used on roads in Highland Heights, which already has a stockpile ready for next year. Service Director Thom Evans said the city typically uses about 4,200 tons of road salt a year, but only 2,400 tons were used last winter. The deadline's approaching for city approval to join with a state purchasing program for next year's supply and Evans said much less will be needed because of the reserves. "We have a lot on hand and we're going to have a lot more soon," he said, adding that the city has to accept another delivery from last year's order. At about $45 a ton, the savings from using 1,800 fewer tons was about $80,000.

Mayfield Heights Mayor Gregory Costabile is heading to Washington, D.C. in hopes of bringing back some more federal dollars with him. Congressman Steve LaTourette, R-14, puts on an annual program for mayors in his district. Costabile was invited because Mayfield Heights, which has been represented by Rep. Bass Energy paid to drop breach of contract claim.
The gas well controversy ended quietly with no discussion Tuesday as Highland Heights City Council approved a $600,000 settlement with Bass Energy. Council President Cathy Murphy said that city officials will have plenty to say about the matter, but did not want to speak publicly until the settlement was signed. "It's not done until it's done," she said. Bass Energy had filed a $7 million lawsuit in 2008 after council rescinded a lease to drill two gas wells in Highland Heights Community Park. Mayor Scott Coleman signed that initial lease in 2007. As a proposed settlement to the lawsuit, council considered another lease earlier this year. That lease, which also would have placed two gas wells in the park, was unanimously rejected by …

Effort would be followup to 2004 master plan.
Mayfield Road's retail development in Mayfield Heights lacks a sense of identity, according to planners who have proposed a $45,000 strategic plan the corridor. Mayor Gregory Costabile, who presented the idea to City Council for approval, said at a committee meeting Monday that the study represents the next step following the 2004 master plan, which he called "more of a wish list of where the city should go in the next 10 to 15 years." The strategic plan would be prepared by URS, represented Monday by engineer Chris Nielson and J. Jeffrey Homans, vice president of planning and environmental services. Participating with them would be the Coral Company, a commercial development group. Coral Company President and CEO Peter Rubin said there's …

Solicitors will be told not to approach residences on registry.
With the city's solicitor law being tested in the courts, Mayfield Heights Mayor Gregory Costabile sought other protection for residents who don't want salespeople knocking at their doors. The result is a "no knock" registry that is being created and will be given to solicitors when they get city permits. Residents can call the city to be added to the list. Members of the Neighborhood Block Watch group also circulating "do not knock" signup forms on their streets. Because there also are people who sell door-to-door without permits, police officers will give them copies of the registry when it is compiled. "The city's approach is not to infringe on anything. If people still think that knocking on doors is the way to sell their wares, they …

Rezoning request first made last year.
With the proposed Shoppes at Brainard Crossings project possibly taking away overflow parking, the owner of Highland Medical Center brought back a rezoning request. Dr. Daniel Cavolo appeared at a Highland Heights City Council committee meeting to pursue a rezoning issue to add 32 parking spaces at the site, which is across Brainard Road from the former Catalano's grocery. Employees have been using the Catalano's lot for parking. ""We need to expand parking for patients and our employees," said Cavolo, who owns the building. The lot has 56 parking spaces, which is short of the estimated 75 to 80 spaces needed to meet city codes. "Twenty-six years ago, when it was built, it was approved with less spaces than required," Cavolo said. He added…
