The firm will provide monthly and project-to-project engineering services
Mayfield Heights will bring URS Corp. back as its engineering services provider for another year at virtually the same cost. An engineer from URS, one of the world's largest engineering and design firms, will receive a $2,100-per-month retainer for attendance at various council, zoning and legislative meetings, periodic reports, site inspections, project budgets and technical services requested by the mayor. That amount is fixed, while another payment tier would paid on a project-to-project basis. "The monthly retainer barely increases, and there is a slight increase in the rate for an inspector — $2," Mayor Anthony DiCicco said. "Other than that, the contract is pretty much the same (as last year's)." The contract expires in February 2014…

The city's current system is more than 20 years old
One could have given birth to a child and celebrated his or her high school and college graduations in the time that has passed since the City of Mayfield Heights bought a phone system. "What people don't realize is that the phone system we have is quite antiquated," Councilwoman Gayle Teresi said. "It's difficult to get parts and the other issue is that the wiring is in the basement of the old city hall, so that just adds to all of the problems we have with the phone system and the connectivity with the police and fire departments." That will all change now that the city has approved the purchase of a new VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) phone system. The city has accepted a request for proposal from Rocky River-based OCI Inc. for $43,…

Mayfield officials hope Rochester, N.Y.-based Morgan Communities' acquisition of Marsol will lead to fewer reported crimes there
Though fights, thefts and other crimes at Marsol Towers continue to fill the Mayfield Heights Police log, city officials are hopeful for a safer future. Residents of the six-building apartment campus on Marsol Road recently received letters discussing a change in ownership. Willoughby-based K&D Group has sold the property to Morgan Properties, a firm in Rochester, N.Y. that manages and operates apartments in 10 states. "This company will be doing some house cleaning with regard to the suites and any problem tenants that they have in the complex," Mayfield Heights Councilwoman Gayle Teresi said. "I was very excited to hear that." The company's website now offers visitors the opportunity to explore and apply for leases at Marsol. …
Mayfield Heights City Council added a resolution to its agenda in honor of Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry
The rescues of three women held captive in a Cleveland house since the early 2000s weighed so heavily on Mayfield Heights officials' minds that they deemed a resolution necessary. City Council voted to add a resolution to the agenda acknowledging the return of Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry to their homes after they were found in a Seymour Avenue home owned by 52-year old Ariel Castro. Monday night was the first time Mayfield Heights City Council has gathered since the story about the women broke and became a national story. The resolution is "an expression of relief and joy" over their discovery. "With Mother's Day, everybody was thinking about those girls," Mayor Anthony DiCicco said of city council. "It really hit hard …

The Grove is only in Phase I, but officials have scheduled three programs and open house there, beginning this summer
Mayfield Village residents will get a feel for having an amphitheatre in their community this summer when programming at The Grove begins. The Grove, on SOM Center Road, north of Parkview Pool, is a three-acre green space that village officials hope will become Mayfield's version of Cain Park in Cleveland Heights or Perici Amphitheatre in Twinsburg. The Grove, in Mayfield Village's Greenway Corridor, has access to the Greenway trail system, the Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Reservation, and the softball and soccer fields. Residents will be invited to an open house on June 22 where they can let officials know what uses they want to see for The Grove. Officials have also planned three activities for the space: "I think it sounds really …

Watch this clip to see his passionate message
If Mayfield area teenagers didn't already have enough reasons to avoid texting while driving, they got a few emphatic ones from a visiting congressman on Monday. As part of U.S. Rep. David Joyce's visit to Mayfield High School, the legislator commanded students to avoid the now illegal practice. While students brought up privacy legislation and gay marriage during the question-and-answer segment, texting was a topic Joyce brought up on his own. Watch the video above to see how passionate he is on the topic. Read blog posts from Joyce's office on Patch.

The village has hired a Cleveland firm to provide organic products for its public green spaces
Grass might only be material to walk and play on to some, but Mayfield Village has announced a new process to preserve its public green space. The village will treat its fields with natural, organic lawn products instead of pesticides and herbicides. The practice began this spring, using the products and installation skills of Cleveland-based Good Nature Organic Lawn Care. "They made a commitment to stop using lawn chemicals on six athletic fields, six acres and 50 grass areas," Good Nature CEO Alec McClennan said. "That's a pretty big commitment on their part." The areas that will be treated include Mayfield Village's soccer fields in front of Progressive Insurance and The Grove, the site of a future amphitheatre. McClennan said most …
