Ivan Schwarz seeking to build local film business.
It's great to have a movie like The Avengers shooting in town, but what Cleveland really needs is to develop its film industry as a whole, according to Ivan Schwarz, executive director of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission. "People get excited about The Avengers. We're trying to create jobs and economic development here. It's about creating a film industry here that's 24/7, 365 days a year," he told members of the Mayfield Area Chamber of Commerce at a lunch meeting. Schwarz was working as a location manager on Band of Brothers in 1999 when he scouted Cleveland as a possible location. He really enjoyed his time here and decided this is where he wanted to live. "I was working on Entourage when I left Los Angeles. Once the city dissolved …

Effort would be followup to 2004 master plan.
Mayfield Road's retail development in Mayfield Heights lacks a sense of identity, according to planners who have proposed a $45,000 strategic plan the corridor. Mayor Gregory Costabile, who presented the idea to City Council for approval, said at a committee meeting Monday that the study represents the next step following the 2004 master plan, which he called "more of a wish list of where the city should go in the next 10 to 15 years." The strategic plan would be prepared by URS, represented Monday by engineer Chris Nielson and J. Jeffrey Homans, vice president of planning and environmental services. Participating with them would be the Coral Company, a commercial development group. Coral Company President and CEO Peter Rubin said there's …

Sales soared in 2011, but have been more modest so far this year.
For Northeast Ohio car dealers, 2012 so far hasn’t brought a repeat of the big sales of 2011, when consumers returned to the market after a terrible 2010. But they’re optimistic things will pick up as the year goes along. As a 21-county region, Northeast Ohio car dealers sold 47,855 cars through March — about 1.8 percent more than the same period last year, according to the Greater Cleveland Auto Dealers Association. That’s a more modest gain than in other U.S. markets, where sales jumped by 20 percent over the same period, according to a National Auto Dealers Association report. But area sales managers don't focus on such comparisons. Their confidence in a slowly improving economy and a loosening loan market hasn't wavered. If the GCADA's…

Rezoning request first made last year.
With the proposed Shoppes at Brainard Crossings project possibly taking away overflow parking, the owner of Highland Medical Center brought back a rezoning request. Dr. Daniel Cavolo appeared at a Highland Heights City Council committee meeting to pursue a rezoning issue to add 32 parking spaces at the site, which is across Brainard Road from the former Catalano's grocery. Employees have been using the Catalano's lot for parking. ""We need to expand parking for patients and our employees," said Cavolo, who owns the building. The lot has 56 parking spaces, which is short of the estimated 75 to 80 spaces needed to meet city codes. "Twenty-six years ago, when it was built, it was approved with less spaces than required," Cavolo said. He added…

Developer agrees to ballot issue proposed by Highland Heights.
Developer Lance Osborne told city officials he'll accept their ballot language requiring a zoning change for a GetGo convenience store/gas station that is part of his Shoppes at Brainard Crossing project. "We are in agreement with the concept of the ordinance," he told Highland Heights City Council at a committee meeting on Tuesday. "Our attorney will have to make it conform with our proposed development agreement." The development, planned for the former Catalano's grocery site at Brainard and Wilson Mills roads, would feature 25,000 square feet of retail space at the back of the property and a 5,500-square-foot GetGo convenience store/gas station closer to Wilson Mills. The property is zoned for local business use. Last year, Osborne …

H.H.B. Publishing owners John Savage and Dan Donatelli give advice about starting your own business.
It can happen anywhere at any time for potential entrepreneurs. For John Savage and Dan Donatell, the "epiphany moment" occurred years ago at party in Southern California. That's when the Mayfield High School graduates realized they would go into business together. "He says, 'Dan, I don't know how your literary talents haven't been discovered yet, but I think we should take advantage of that and start a publishing company ourselves,'" Donatelli remembered Savage telling him. It truly was an epiphany because the works Donatelli had composed up to that point were considered "practice" and had been shelved. Now, the 2000 Mayfield graduates and former baseball teammates operate H.H.B. Publishing, with Donatelli's "Music Made by Bears" as its …

Get more sleep, don't get discouraged or be afraid to fail, said Arianna Huffington at the CBC Magazine Female Entrepreneur Summit in Mayfield Village Wednesday.
Do you charge your phone by your bed? Well, stop it! Why? You'll be tempted to check your email which will hamper your ability to get a good night's sleep. Not only will that sap your energy, but it can also adversely affect your health, said Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the AOL Huffington Post Media Group. As the keynote speaker at the CBC Magazine Female Entrepreneur Summit at the Beta Banquet and Conference Center in Mayfield Village Wednesday, Huffington offered some more advice for women just starting their entrepreneurial careers.

Visitors flock Beachwood Community Center for eco-friendly business expo
This year's Green Dream eco-friendly business expo looks to be the biggest ever. Beachwood High School student Courtney Fishman was counting attendees for just two hours at the beginning of the event and said she saw 1,500 people - and there were four hours to go. More exhibitors - 133 - were there than ever before, and the outdoor health and wellness tent was expanded by 60 feet to hold the extra vendors. Six food trucks lined up outside, forming a food court. "I think it's fantastic. Definitely worthwhile to attend," said Karen Shoemaker, branch manager of the Beachwood Dollar Bank. "I'm really impressed with the leadership skills and the impression that they give." The Green Dream students were giddy toward the end of the event. "I've …

Hi, Jeanne The vast majority of items we publish are specific to the individual Patches. From time to time, however, we do stories that cross boundaries. An example would be coverage of visits to the area by presidential candidates; if a candidate visits one Patch, we're pretty sure what he has to say there would be of interest in other Patches as well. The same thinking led us to look at a …   more ›
