What Would You Want in Mayland Plaza?

What is your dream vision for what is still the largest vacant parcel in the city?

People continually point to the underutilized Mayland Shopping plaza as a place for potential economic development.

The plaza was a focus in the 2004 master plan, and the things being said about filling the numerous vacancies today mirror those said nine years ago.

The old master plan reads:

The site, actually an arrangement of seven strip shopping buildings, was repeatedly cited by community representatives as a location that reflected poorly on the community and should be targeted for redevelopment

The property came up multiple times during Mayfield Heights City Council's recent interviews for the vacant seat.

"A huge missed opportunity is what's going on in the Mayland Plaza. It is a huge, huge missed opportunity. It is approximately 17 acres of commercial and retail property that under-utilized to I don't even know what percent. It is 60 to 70 percent vacant right now," candidate Benjamin Stocum said when asked to discuss ideas he would bring to the table to increase revenues.

More years will pass before new developments are seen there, but references to the property in recent council meetings could indicate that plans may soon be created. If that happens, what would you like to see in the plaza?

Whether it be residential spaces, community/city centers or retail? What is your preference.

A long time ago, Lowes looked at Mayland and I believe it was gridlock once again from the city and Lowes decided not to go forward. Because the area at Mayland sits back from the road, it wouldn't be that "big box" looking from the road. They need to completely knock down the exisiting and place a well thought out complex. The Greens of Lyndhurst is a good example of how this land should look if it was retail again.....

I would love to see some nice apartments, there is really nothing in the area that is higher quality, safe, quiet. They were going to build something on Landerhaven but that got squashed.

They already proposed "nice apartments at the corner of Lander and Cedar. No go.
The problem is that all apartments start out being "nice", or luxury. In 10 years, they turn to bad tenants. Mayfield has enough apartment buildings. They only breed trouble in time. I certainly think it sounds like a good idea, but in theory.... you'll pay for it later. Just look at Gates Mills Towers, or Marsol. Those used to be nice, upscale buildings when they first were being leased out. Not anymore. An upscale retail development would be nice. No more drug stores!

Maybe Giant Eagle could put a Get-Go gas station and plaza there? It would be a larger area than the GetGo on Mayfield and would be somewhat out of site. Mayfield might like that and Highland Heights would sure like that plan. I would even buy GetGo gas there.

This lot contains a gas well in the center of it with two containment tanks backing up to the apartments on the back side of it. The liability of this industrial piece can be an issue and should be capped. This would attract better interest and possible development plans.
