Mayfield High defeated Willoughby South 4-2 on Wednesday to advance to the baseball Division I Euclid District final.
The Wildcats, 22-4 on the season, took an early lead on Willoughby South with single runs in the first and second innings on a sacrifice fly by Larry Pinto and ground out by Justin Bonchek, respectively. Both came with the bases loaded and Mayfield threatened to put the game away.
Still, that was enough to win behind a strong outing by starting pitcher Matt Iosue, who held Willoughby South hitless until the seventh and final inning.
The district final will be at 4:30 p.m. against Mentor, which defeated Shaker Heights 3-0 on Wednesday.
