Gilmour Academy got behind early against Beachwood on Friday night and never really could catch up.
Despite junior guard David Linane’s 26 points, the Lancers couldn’t overcome a huge early hole and fell to the Bison, 87-79, at home.
Sophomores AJ Wright and Colin Zucker scored 10 points each for Gilmour. John Davis III led the Bison with 27 points and Ellis Cohen had 24.
"I think we came out a little flat tonight, and Beachwood came out shooting well. … Obviously they have a tremendous point guard in the Davis kid. We had a hard time defending him," Pfundstein said.
Rob Catanese, who Pfundstein considers to be the team’s best defender, injured his left hamstring in the middle of the first quarter and did not return. Pfundstein said Catanese is day-to-day.
The Bison (3-2) raced out to a 20-3 run to open the game, but the Lancers (2-4) rallied with a 13-2 run of their own to cut into the lead and finished the first quarter down, 22-16.
But the Bison took wing over the next two quarters for a 75-52 advantage after three quarters until the Lancers had a 27-point spurt in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
"Our guys play hard. That’s what kept us in the game. We’re not going to back down. We had to fight through some adversity and we did. That’s how we were able to come back," Pfundstein said.
The Lancers host the Gilmour Holiday Tournament beginning on Wednesday. They face Streetsboro at 4:30 p.m.
